LG is adding to the growing list of TV brands that want to put a webcam on your smart TV. The Smart Cam (currently available on LG’s website for $99) snaps on to the top of select LG smart TVs, records video at a 1080p resolution, and works with a number of apps on LG’s proprietary smart platform, webOS.

The list of supported Smart Cam-compatible apps currently includes RemoteMeeting, an online video-conferencing service, and FlexIt, a personalized wellness platform that connects users to wellness professionals in a one-on-one setting. Independa Health Club supports telehealth sessions and offers services such as prescription savings, health and exercise videos, in-home lab tests and more.
There are also fitness-based apps Exercite—which tracks the user’s body and offers real-time feedback, like a physical trainer—and Home Dance by 1M, a collaboration between LG and 1Million Dance Studio, a popular choreography team. Home Dance by 1M offers dance clips and tutorials, giving users the opportunity to dance alongside on-screen instructors.

The Smart Cam keeps privacy in mind, too, for folks squeamish about having a camera in their living room. There’s a switch on top of the device that covers the lens whenever the camera is not in use.
Currently, the Smart Cam is only compatible with LG smart TVs running webOS 22 or 23, the two most recent versions of the software suite. This means that it’s compatible with the LG C2, our current pick for the best TV for most people, its follow-up, the LG C3, and other 2- and 3-Series TVs. However LG TVs released before 2022 will not be compatible with Smart Cam.
